Dear Young People,
Education is a basic universal right. The process starts in the family, and continues through preschool, elementary, middle and high school, and finally, university. Universities aim to equip their graduates with academic, social and cultural knowledge, skills and competencies, and to help young people become world citizens who recognize the importance of science, who have strong communication skills, who respect human rights and who adopt democratic attitudes. Our goal as the Department of Special Education in the Hasan Kalyoncu University Faculty of Education is to equip you with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies required in this contemporary age, and to make sure that all our graduates practice their profession with the belief that education based on the rule of law and universal principles is a proven and justified right.
One Turkey’s greatest strengths is its young population. To create the society of the future, however, we must ensure that our children are equipped with universal principles, national and moral values, and our cultural heritage. The productivity and qualifications of young people are related directly to the quality of the education they receive. Our goal is thus make sure that you graduate with all the professional qualifications and competencies specified in the regulations of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Ministry of National Education related to teacher training and special education teachers.
The Department of Special Education Teaching in the Hasan Kalyoncu University Faculty of Education was founded in the 2015–2016 Academic Year upon the approval of the Council of Higher Education, and admitted its first students in the 2016–2017 Academic Year. Our mission in the Department is to train highly qualified teachers, and we are the first department to be founded under this name after the various programs offered by state and foundation universities were combined to create Special Education Teaching programs. Our goal is to train teachers who value evidence-based practices backed by science, who work in cooperation with others, who recognize individual differences, who explore social resources and provide guidance in their utilization, and who prioritize working with service-providing agencies and organizations. In addition to the academic dimension of your education, which will consist of area courses, elective courses and general knowledge courses, you will gain practical experience in the research and application center, as well as in school observation and institutional experience courses, thus providing you with all the necessary qualifications you will need in your future professional practice. Our department adopts a student-centered approach to education, combining both theory and practice, and aims to train teachers who follow scientific and technological developments closely, who have the ability to utilize technology, who use their initiative and who have advanced problem-solving skills. To this end, we treat young people not only as students, but also as prospective teachers, and support their right to take part and to have a say in professional practice.
We have no doubt you will retain your belief in the value of science, reason and hard work, and your acceptance and love of everyone when teaching, unconditionally. We have confidence in you, and recognize our solemn responsibility in preparing you today to become the educators of tomorrow. We believe with all sincerity that as you practice your profession as graduates of the Hasan Kalyoncu Department of Special Education, you will strive for the best and live by the motto that “every individual is unique,” reflecting it both in your words and actions. For our part, we promise to continue to look to tomorrow today, so that we can be a department where dreams come true…
