Message from the Head of Department

Dear Students,

The Department of Special Education aims to train teachers who adhere to professional ethics, contribute to the development and learning processes of individuals with special needs, and enable them to participate actively, independently and productively in social life. The Special Education Department of the Faculty of Education, Hasan Kalyoncu University, which set out with this aim, was established in 2015.

Following the decision of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the undergraduate programs previously offered separately as Teaching of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments and Gifted/Talented Individuals were merged and restructured in 2015 under the name Special Education Teaching. The Hasan Kalyoncu University Special Education Department was one of the departments that implemented the renewed Special Education Teaching Program for the first time in the 2016-2017 academic year, and admitted students to the program at undergraduate level for the first time. In designing the program, priority was given to elective courses from the Intellectual Disability specialization area, with the aim that our graduates acquire competencies in different areas of special education, namely Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Giftedness, and Hearing and Visual Impairments.

While students of the Special Education Teaching program can practice at special education schools as part of the teaching practicum courses, they are also given the opportunity to observe and practice the educational assessment and intervention processes of children and individuals with special needs at our Special Education Application and Research Center, established in 2016.

For our graduates and teachers working in the field of special education to continue their graduate studies, the master’s program in Special Education started in the 2017-2018 academic year and the PhD program in the 2018-2019 academic year. We continue to serve with our experienced academic staff, who are ready to share their knowledge, skills and experience in the field of special education with you.
